My directorial debut. As a sophomore in college, I directed Heathers for Boston University’s largest on-campus auditorium, Tsai Performance Center. I had dreamed of directing a musical since I was a child. Heathers was the perfect show to begin with because I had always loved dark comedy, and I felt comfortable mastering that tone. I focused on being resourceful given the limited resources of our student-run theater group, and producing work of the highest caliber within our means.
A respected alumnus of BU working in the theater industry came to watch the show and told me it was “the best show [he’d] ever seen on the Tsai stage.” That comment meant the world to me. I was awarded the award for “Best Director of the 2017-2018 Season” later that semester.
Heathers was the show that made me fall in love with directing. I will always remember those months, when I felt like I had finally figured it all out. “This,” I thought “is what I am meant to do.”
